The Architecture Department studies, in particular, at the scale of buildings. All scales nest in built environments from city to building to furniture. Each scale impacts the next. This course serves as a foundation, beginning at the smallest scale and progresses with lessons learned for the largest. 

Arch 231 uses physical making as a learning tool by constructing 3 projects using simple tools and materials. Form and material are simultaneous conditions. This understanding helps students provide physical presence to their ideas.

Students began by observing how materials inform the outcome of our ideas. Design exercises will be based in the world of, craft and making, simulating larger forces of construction and fabrication. Ideas will be translated into physical objects and experiences. Two simple material exercises (Project 1 & 2) will lead up to a longer sited fabrication (Project 3).
