PROJECT 1: THE SIDED OBJECT

Problem
  • Using cardboard and simple assembly technique, create a non-representational form which, when viewed from different vantage points appears as binary opposites. 
  • Examples of binary opposites; mass/frame, solid/void, concave/convex, linear/planar, simple/complex, positive/negative, implosion/explosion, poised/grounded, absence/presence, exterior/interior, reveal/conceal, protect/refuge, static/dynamic, modern/ancient, deliberate/chance…

Final Documentation
  • Materials will be recycled, salvaged, reused or provided to provide an equitable course for all students.
  • Collect recycled corrugated cardboard.
  • Cut, rip, saw, soak, laminate, fold, glue, tape.
  • Investigate white glue, contact cement, paper backed tape, and double-sided tape.
  • Fabrication to be self-supporting, stable without base or support.
  • Consider expression of marks of making and material
  • Consider structure as form.
  • Consider joints as inherent articulation​.​​
