Location: CBE, Gould Hall
Date: Spring Quarter 2023
Duration: 10 Weeks
Level: Entry-Level
“This bench is meant to facilitate the gathering of people and celebrates the act of sitting together in a public space.
The arrangement leaves room for interpretation, allowing visitors and users to do as they wish in the given space.
This encourages social interaction by providing diverse ways of sitting.”  Sebastian Marbacher
Problem
Part 1
  • Groups explore and document a selection of possible sites around Gould and Architecture Hall. Select one site to explore in depth, research and express the visible physical, social and temporal context. Understand and express the site at a nested set of scales and diverse set of interactions.
Part 2
  • Groups design, model and draw a site-specific intervention built from provided 2x6 material for your selected site, (ten - 8’ long 2x6). The design should physically and culturally engage with the specific site, two people and an activity or activities you have chosen.
Part 3
  • Groups install site-specific intervention. Test whether it physically and culturally engages with the specific site and community.
Process
  • Explore 2X6 material for inherent properties and opportunities.
  • Assemble materials with crafted connections.
  • Investigate tools of the Fab Lab.
  • Consider the viewpoint and frame of the site.
  • Consider expression of marks of material and manufacture.
  • Fabrication to be physically installed on site.
  • Consider the evocative potential of narrative combined with material.
  • Consider structure as form, and joint as expression and inherent articulation.
Purpose
  • Materials can be assembled to create an empathetic supportive presence. A physical object can be seen as an invitation for social exchange. A single simple object can offer multiple opportunities for engagement and human activities, provide a terrain of human support for two people.
