Problem
  • Using simple materials and assembly technique, create a specific representational form which, has structural stance and gesture.
  • From found scrap wood and branches, model a chosen dog breed at actual full size.
  • Fabrication to be self-supporting, structurally stable without base/support.
  • Fabrication to explain itself, without additional narrative.
Process
  • Find a photo of animal, sketch your subject in 3D to understand dynamic forms.
  • Assemble found wood by investigating connection details such as wire, dowels wood glue, or wood screws.
  • Introduction to drill, hand saw, band saw, needle-nose pliers and side-cutters as needed.
  • Find a simple and strong way to join pieces of wood to form a stable structure, representing an actual animal at full size. Review fabrication strategy based on material and tool.
  • Consider simplicity, economy of material, time and skill.
  • Consider expression of marks of making and material
  • Consider structure as form.
  • Consider joint as expression and inherent articulation.
Purpose
  • Introduction to structures by building a self-supporting frame, which will function as a standing, expression of structure. At the same time, the representational objectives guide as functional choices. The resultant form will both be pragmatic and expressive.
  • Understanding of scale.
Final Documentation
  • Photography should consider composition, lighting, and background.
  • Process
  • Overall views
  • One detail
